NYSUT Asks for Test Waiver

Getty Images/ Halfpoint New York State United Teachers sent the request to the State Education Department for the same waiver that was granted last year citing the continued challenges students and educators are facing during the pandemic that disrupt the normal education process. The Union says “without standardized instructional modes, there should not be a standardized test at the end of the year.”  NYSUT adds teachers are trying to also address social emotional needs of students caused by not only the pandemic but last year’s social unrest.  The Union says it doesn’t expect those factors to change in the near future, especially given the recent surge in cases and the emergence of new variants of the coronavirus.

New York schools face questions about staff vaccinations

One thing that seems clear is that it probably will not be an option for school districts to mandate the shot, said Jay Worona, deputy executive director and general counsel for the New York State School Boards Association.  “I think it would have to come from either an executive order of the governor or an act of the state Legislature,” he said.  It is likely premature for the state to consider such questions when there are not enough doses for all who want them, Worona said. A guidance released last month by the The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces anti-discrimination laws in the workplace, left open the possibility that public employers could require essential workers to be vaccinated, subject to certain exemptions.
