Five thousand initial doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are slated to arrive in Yuma County between Monday and Wednesday of next week, which the Yuma County Public Health Services District plans to begin dispensing âright awayâ in a phased approach.
According to Yuma County Public Health Services District Director Diana Gomez, Yuma County is not receiving the Pfizer vaccine in its first allocation; whether it will receive Pfizer doses in the future is still to be determined.
Moderna is âa much more flexible vaccine,â Gomez said. âIt can be stored at regular temperature; it does not require the ultra cold storage (as Pfizer requires) which, as a rural community, gives us a higher level of flexibility as far as deploying it.â
Yuma County surpassed its own record yet again as Mondayâs COVID-19 update from the Yuma County Public Health Services District reported 1,129 new cases â the highest number reported in a single day since Dec. 8, when 735 new cases were reported. The Dec. 8 numbers included a large number of cases from the Arizona State Prison Complex-Yuma.
The health district noted that there may be a discrepancy in Mondayâs data, as âthe reporting suggests a significantly larger number of daily cases than usual,â Mondayâs report stated. âThe Yuma County Health District is working diligently to verify the reported numbers and will provide an update once resolved.â
