The Canadian Union of Public Employees says the Moe government is considering plans to cut services to the microbiology lab at Yorkton Regional Health Centre. The union calls it a betrayal of rural health services that will increase wait times for diagnostic services.
Sandra Seitz, president of CUPE Local 5430 says, “Rural health services have been struggling under this provincial government, and the cutting of microbiology lab services would further erode rural health care services in Saskatchewan,” She says, “Having to send samples to Regina would double the wait time for test results meaning rural patients are at a greater risk of delayed treatment.”

Another week of no new cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre.
Interim Director of Acute Care for the Yorkton area, Janna-Lea Yawney says they’re hopeful the 1st East and West inpatient medical units will be taken off the declared outbreak list by March 10.
She says the fact there is no new cases can be attributed to the measures they have in place.
“We have enhanced screening in the hospital, we have also the requirement for all staff and visitors to wear masks throughout the facility, perform hand hygiene upon entering and go through a series of screening questions,” Yawney explained.
YORKTON A total of 91 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in relation to an outbreak at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Janna-Lea Yawney, the director of acute care at the hospital, said as of 4 a.m. on Feb. 5, 60 of those total cases are considered recovered, including 25 staff, leaving 31 cases active. The cases include 14 patients, 32 staff, six visitors and 39 secondary cases. Two suspected outbreaks, in the obstetrics and pediatrics units, have been lifted. That was very exciting news because that tells us that we re going the right direction, said Yawney. Yawney said “every room is open for business” and the hospital is still offering services to the community.
