WOODLAND, Calif. An Arizona softball coach who was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor in her Yolo County home has been sentenced to at least 37 years state prison.
According to a press release from the Yolo County District Attorney s office, Buck Maldonado Thomas, 43, was convicted of multiple crimes, including forcible sexual assault of a minor, first degree burglary, and sexual battery of a minor in October. His crimes spanned three states and included multiple victims.
The Yolo County District Attorney’s Neighborhood Court (NHC) Program is seeking volunteer panelists. Trainings are set to take place virtually in January 2021.
NHC, which began in June 2013, is an innovative restorative justice diversionary program within the District Attorney’s Office. NHC also includes the Steps to Success (S2S) program, which is geared towards offenders experiencing challenges due to mental health and addiction issues.
NHC conferences are staffed by local volunteers who facilitate and hear criminal cases to develop agreements with the offenders aimed at providing individualized outcomes, using the principles of restorative justice. This process provides a voice for members of the community, and those affected by crimes, to express how they have been harmed and what they need in order to make things right.

For Alyca Reynolds, Yolo County’s “Steps to Success” diversion program offered more than just a dismissed court case.
“It helped me get out of an abusive situation with my family,” Reynolds said of the program, part of the county’s Neighborhood Court restorative justice model.
Arrested in 2018 on battery and threats charges, Reynolds got a chance at redemption through Steps to Success. She says its teachings also gave her the courage to move to another state, where she’s now writing a memoir about her life.
“You don’t have to stay where you’re planted, even if it seems like you should,” Reynolds said.
