City of Manistee, Friends Remember Artist and Veteran Leslie Laskey

9 & 10 News June 28, 2021 Photo: Jim Olvera Leslie Laskey passed away on June 17, and the City of Manistee declared July 2 Leslie Laskey day. “His work will be here, but he won’t,” said long time friend Jamey Barnard. Leslie laskey was a beloved manistee community member, born in 1921. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. After the war, he taught architecture and design at Washington University in St. Louis. Barnard met Laskey at a workshop he was hosting in Onekama, and remained friends with Laskey for 30 years. “It was pretty much an honor to hear from him directly,” he said. “He had a lot of good ideas.”

Over 400 Masks On Display in Stay Safe Mask Exhibit in Manistee

9 & 10 News February 11, 2021 2020 was a crazy year for everyone. Art can be a great way to process some of life’s most difficult chapters. The goal of the “Stay Safe” mask exhibit is to explore the experiences during the health pandemic and foster a sense of connection.  Over 400 people have participated by decorating blank paper mache masks expressing their personal stories during quarantine. They will host an online tour free to the public on Friday, February 12 at 1:00 pm. You can follow along live at the Ramsdell’s Facebook Page.  The exhibit at the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts every Friday and Saturday throughout the month of February.
