ROCKFORD The Rockford Register Star is seeking outstanding teenagers to be named the Young Americans of 2021.
The honor recognizes young men and women from the region for their exemplary character, leadership, achievements and contributions to their schools, places of worship, organizations and communities.
This is the 64th year of recognizing the leadership of Young Americans. The people selected for the award in many cases have become community leaders for decades after the recognition. You can t help but have a feeling of optimism because you know that there are still young people coming up who have endured, in some cases, some real hardships to get to where they are, said Paul Logli, a former Young American who later served as Winnebago County state s attorney and now leads the United Way of Rock River Valley. And they re going to achieve even greater things as they move on in life.
Webb, 37, is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in the Dec. 26 attack at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford. Prosecutors say he killed 69-year-old Jerome Woodfork and 73-year-old Dennis Steinhoff, both of Rockford, and 65-year-old Thomas Furseth, of Machesney Park. They say he also wounded two teenagers and a 62-year-old man.
Authorities said the attack seemed to be a random act of violence and an attorney for Webb, Elizabeth Bucko, has said the Green Beret may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
In a December statement released shortly after the shootings, Army Maj. Gen. John Brennan, commander of the 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne), which includes the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), said the incident was . completely out of character with Webb s 12 years of honorable service.

ROCKFORD, Ill. - An Army special forces sergeant pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and other charges in the killing of three people and wounding of three others during a mass shooting at an Illinois bowling alley.
Duke Webb, of Shalimar, Florida, appeared in court via video from the jail in Winnebago County, Illinois, where he is being held without bond, the Rockford Register Star reported.
