Press Release – Forest And Bird
Restoring peat wetlands – our secret climate resource
New Zealand’s peat wetlands are more powerful than tropical forests at absorbing carbon.
For World Wetlands Day today, Forest & Bird is releasing regional data to show wetlands are our secret resource in working to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“The Government needs to introduce a plan to protect and recharge Aotearoa’s wetlands,” says Forest & Bird freshwater advocate Annabeth Cohen.
“Only about 10 percent of our historic wetlands remain, and the few wetlands left are dwindling every day to make room for pasture or urban development.”
“If we save every remaining wetland, and double what we’ve got, there could be great gains for our wellbeing and for our climate goals.”

Vietnam responds to World Wetlands Day The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) has asked other ministries, agencies and localities to take action in response to World Wetlands Day (February 2).
In a document issued on January 18, the MONRE ordered stepping up the communications work to raise public awareness of the significance of wetlands, and called for efforts in preserving and using wetlands sustainably.
It also suggested integrating wetland preservation into programmes, planning schemes and development projects.
World Wetlands Day 2021 highlights the contribution of wetlands to the quantity and quality of freshwater on the planet. Water and wetlands are connected in an inseparable co-existence that is vital to life, human wellbeing and the health of the planet.
Pakistanis planting trees to tackle climate change
DW has seen a Maritime Affairs Ministry tender notice, which seeks proposals from national and international firms for the urban development project.
Environmentalists and leaders of the provincial Sindh government are opposed to the Bundal Island New Dubai housing project. The federal government issued an unconstitutional ordinance. The Sindh government will resist it for the sake of our environment and our people, Murtaza Wahab, a spokesperson for the provincial government, told DW.
Ali Haider Zaidi, the federal minister for maritime affairs, and Malik Amin Aslam, the federal minister for climate change, did not respond to DW s request for a comment.
It was the third week of March, our newspaper and website were filled with stories about COVID-19 and I naively thought a sweet story about a pedal car in Lancaster could serve as a distraction from the spreading coronavirus, cancellations and growing restrictions.
The scope of what was happening had not fully set in, even though Major League Baseball shut spring training down four days after we returned from a family trip to see the Milwaukee Brewers in Arizona.
Schools, businesses and other events were beginning to restrict access or closing altogether. But I still thought a trip to southwestern Wisconsin to provide our readers with something that didnât revolve around the virus was doable. And this is when I realized that virtually nothing was going to be immune.
