More than a year ago, Bob Szuter laid off most of his 80-person staff, leaving just 15 core workers to continue operating the restaurant and brewery. He wasn t sure if his business would survive, and he had two young girls at home.
The wholesale side, which once comprised just a quarter of the business, now kept the brewery going, along with carryout and delivery operations, as the restaurant dining room remained closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Once businesses in Ohio were allowed to re-open last year, he had new challenge: operating under COVID-19 restrictions, like social distancing, capacity rules, and mask guidelines put forth by the state.

Lola’s Kitchen + Bar recently opened Downtown at 201 S. High St. The menu features salads, pizzas and a variety of mains such as baked rigatoni, beef tenderloin, roasted salmon and more. The new spot also serves weekend brunch.
Freedom a la Cart’s new Downtown café and bakery opened today at 123 E. Spring St. The social enterprise provides support and workforce training to survivors of sex trafficking.

On March 15, the City of Columbus officially continued its outdoor seating program for restaurants.
It was first implemented last spring in order to allow restaurants use of the right of way for temporary on-street dining areas of their parking lots to expand seating.
Mayor Andrew Ginther said local restaurants have been hit hard because of the pandemic and the program allows patrons to support them.
“Resuming the program as warm weather approaches will help these businesses and their employees continue to rebound from the pandemic’s impact,” Mayor Andrew Ginther said.
