LONDON, April 23 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Former Olympic champion and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner announced on Friday that she would run for governor of California, bidding to become the country s most senior transgender elected official.
Jenner, 71, who denounced former President Donald Trump s anti-transgender policies in a 2018 Washington Post article, said on Twitter she would be one of growing group of Republicans seeking to unseat Democratic incumbent Gavin Newsom.
Trans rights in the United States have become a flashpoint in recent years between conservatives and liberals.

British PM pledges to exempt prayer from LGBT+ conversion therapy ban Reuters 3 hrs ago

LONDON, April 14 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said prayer for someone exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity will not be criminalised in any conversion therapy ban, as LGBT+ activists and conservative Christians clash over the issue.
Johnson said that appropriate pastoral support (including prayer) would remain legal, in a letter to the Evangelical Alliance, a conservative Christian lobby group representing 3,500 churches, seen by the Thomson Reuters Foundation. I take freedom of speech and freedom of religion very seriously, he wrote in the letter, dated March 27 and which became public this week.

MOLINE, Ill. A Black football player at an Illinois high school captured on video sitting in a locker littered with banana peels after a teammate threatened to break his knees if he didn’t comply says he’s “fine” and wants people to “stop talking about the incident.”
The Moline High School student, who was not identified because he’s a juvenile, also said in a statement released through the Rock Island County State’s Attorney’s Office that those football team members involved in the incident have apologized, Davenport, Iowa, television station KWQC-TV reported.
