At the moment, Guevarra said no requests have been made yet seeking protection as witnesses in the killing of Sonia Gregorio, 53, and her son Frank Anthony, 25.
“But if the witnesses need protection, they may apply directly with the DOJ WPP and we shall evaluate their application for provisional coverage immediately,” he assured.
Sonia and Frank were shot dead by Police Staff Sgt. Sergeant Jonel Nuezca during an altercation in their neighborhood in Barangay Cabayaosan in Paniqui, Tarlac at around 4:30 p.m. last Sunday, Dec. 21.
Nuezca was subjected to inquest proceedings before the Tarlac Provincial Prosecutor’s Office following his surrender at the Rosales Municipal Police Station in Pangasinan at around 6:20 p.m. that Sunday.
She could be heard saying: “My father is a policeman!”
Nuezca’s daughter’s remarks and presence at the scene drew backlash on social media wherein her photos were converted into memes and artworks to bully her.
‘Child is also a victim’
In a statement on Tuesday,
UNICEF Philippines discouraged Filipinos from circulating the child’s photos to protect her from further verbal abuse.
UNICEF noted that the she is also a victim.
“UNICEF is deeply concerned for the well-being of this child whose photos are being circulated on social media platforms where she has been repeatedly vilified and verbally abused. Children have the right to be protected from all forms of violence, including bullying,” the organization said.

A police sergeant whose cold-bloodied murder of a mother and her son in Paniqui, Tarlac, late Sunday afternoon which has gone viral in social media surrendered to the local police an hour after the shooting incident.
A report reaching Camp Crame in Quezon City identified the suspect as Police Senior Master Sgt. Jonel Nuezca, 46, who is assigned at the Crime Laboratory based in Parañaque City.
“The said suspect surrendered at their station (Rosales Municipal Police Station) with his issued firearm Beretta 9 mm with Serial Number M178132 which was used by the suspect in the commission of the crime,” the report read.
