Jury selection underway for Lubbock s first criminal trial in a year

Attorneys for the state and defense worked into the night at a makeshift courtroom at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center as they narrowed down a pool of 79 potential jurors into a panel of 12 with at least two alternates. By late Monday, attorneys were in the process of individually interviewing 55 people who said they couldn t be an impartial juror because of the nature of the case.  Joe Salinas, 42, is charged with a first-degree felony count of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which carries a punishment of five years to life in prison.  Details of the case against Salinas were not provided to the potential jurors during jury selection process. 

Grand jury returns tampering charge in deadly shooting

A 20-year-old Lubbock man arrested in connection with a deadly December shooting in Central Lubbock was indicted Tuesday for allegedly hindering the investigation by concealing the firearm investigators believe was used in the shooting.  Isaiah Guartuche is charged with a third-degree felony count of tampering or fabricating evidence, which carries a punishment of two to 10 years in prison.  Guartuche was initially arrested on Dec. 6 on a warrant charging him with murder.  The Lubbock County District Attorney s Office confirmed the shooting case was presented to the grand jurors, who returned a no-bill on any homicide-related charges and instead indicted him on the tampering charge.
