Roadsweeper is at capacity, Longford MD meeting hears

Cllr John Browne has called on Longford County Council to send the council road sweeper to Newtownfobes and Drumlish once a month to undertake a clean-up.
The motion was raised at last week’s meeting of Longford Municipal District where area engineer Eamon Bennett explained that the machine was currently “at capacity” and could only be deployed to Newtownforbes by special request.
He also explained that Drumlish is in the Granard Municipal District and that the issue should therefore be raised by councillors in that district.
Cllr Browne agreed to contact his colleague, Cllr Paraic Brady to raise the issue in the north Longford district.

Members of Longford Municipal District have supported a proposal to write letters of recognition to Seán and Mary Hussey and to Lalin Swaris for lifting the spirits of people in Longford during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cllr Peggy Nolan spoke up at last week’s meeting to note that “these are people who, for no recompense, just decided to raise our spirits”.

There have been calls for Longford County Council to secure the boundary between Farneyhoogan Estate and the Royal Canal walkway in an effort to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area, which is causing anxiety to residents in the estate.
Bringing a motion before last week’s meeting of Longford Municipal District, Cllr Gerry Warnock explained that the deterioration of the hedgerow between the estate and the canal walk has turned into a “rat run” that has resulted in “an exponential growth in anti-social activity in the area at great annoyance and distress to some of the more vulnerable residents”.
Vows against rezone of Longford Greyhound Track as local group puts pressure on council to buy

The council must purchase the site of Longford Greyhound Stadium, according to local committee, Longford Greyhound Track Amenities (LGTA).
Spokesperson for the group Mark Keenan has expressed concern that immediate action needs to be taken by local representatives to ensure the site of the track does not fall into the hands of commercial or residential developers.
In fact, the property has the opportunity to be turned into a community resource, and should be kept in the community and for the community, Mr Keenan insisted.
