If convicted, Ortiz could face up to a maximum life sentence in state prison.
In the meantime, Ortiz continues to be held at the Twin Tower Correctional Facility in lieu of a $2 million bail.
Ortiz is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 1 for a pretrial hearing.

Authorities said Lindsey was the man with a handgun leaning out the passenger side of the Prius firing back at officers during a chase NBC4 covered on Friday. The chase was on the 710 Freeway, then on streets in Commerce and Vernon, as the suspect opened fire at officers and even appeared to shoot at a sheriff s department helicopter. Officers did not return fire during the chase, according to the sheriff s department.
The Prius stopped in traffic near Bandini Boulevard and Downey Road, where the passenger again began firing at officers, who returned fire, shattering windows on the car. Bullets struck two Downey police vehicles and another person who suffered a graze wound.

The Department of Insurance began an investigation dubbed Operation Double Trouble after receiving a referral in 2018 from AFLAC, Edward’s insurance company. The investigation revealed that from 2014 through 2017 Edwards and Lowe submitted fraudulent disability claims and supporting documentation to AFLAC for alleged injuries they sustained.
