Detectives with the Long Beach Police Department did not expect to hear they had a leak in the department when they listened to a wiretapped call back in 2012. An alleged member of the Baby Insane Crip street gang explained to another member on the recorded call that “the copy lady” kept him up-to-date about a murder investigation where several members of the gang were suspects.

Prosecutors with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office say former Long Beach Police Detective Yvonne Robinson, 50, is “the copy lady” who leaked confidential information.
On Monday, Robinson, a 13-year veteran with the police department, listened to recorded wiretap calls in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom as her criminal trial got underway. On July 18, 2021 at about 6:35 p.m., Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of the beach regarding a disturbance.
When officers arrived in the area, they met with a victim who told them, he was stabbed in the back with an unknown object. He provided the description of the suspect and his last known direction of travel. Officers were then flagged down by other witnesses who described that the suspect was waving a sharp object at people.
Officers located the suspect, later identified as Timothy James Smith, a 32-year old homeless male, a short distance away. Smith disobeyed the officer’s commands and fled from them. At one point, Smith collided into a male and made a slashing motion at him, while holding the object. An officer then deployed his Taser. The Taser made contact with Smith, immediately immobilizing him, allowing officers to quickly take him into custod
A few moments later, the footage showed a dark-colored car driving away.
“They didn’t even run out, they walked out,” Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Jerretta Sandoz explained. “And so, that’s sending a message that we, the criminals, are winning.”
She also blamed the incident on Proposition 47 which minimized criminal sentences for certain non-violent crimes including shoplifting.
“If they’re caught, they’re probably given the equivalent of a traffic ticket,” she noted, adding, “So it’s not taken seriously.”
