But as wildfires continue to blanket vast swaths of California this year, worsening the city’s already polluted air quality, she had to purchase a new inhaler after decades of not using one. “My whole life I’ve lived in sacrifice zones,” she said, referring to the traffic-congested highways, fossil fuel-generated power plants, landfills, fracking sites, and other polluting infrastructure that have plagued California for decades. Now, Vargas is part of the growing environmental justice movement that has been fighting the mammoth oil and gas industry for years.

Supporters and critics alike envisioned Garcetti escaping Los Angeles just in time the term-limited mayor of a beleaguered city finding new life in Washington. Instead, Garcetti watched as the president-elect announced one pick after another for jobs he’d been in contention for, most recently as a domestic climate envoy or secretary of Transportation.

The two-term Democrat who considered a 2020 White House run became part of Joe Biden’s inner circle, then emerged as a widely discussed possibility to join the president-elect’s Cabinet. That isn t going to happen. Garcetti disclosed Thursday he had taken his name out of consideration earlier this week, saying the raging coronavirus crisis made it impossible for him to step away. “This is a time to lead, and not to leave,” he said, while also revealing he s quarantining after his 9-year-old daughter tested positive for the coronavirus. Garcetti tested negative.
