Palau President Visits Taiwan
Surangel Whipps Jr., President of the Micronesian country of Palau, one of Taiwan’s few remaining diplomatic allies, made a five-day official visit to Taiwan in late March to celebrate the opening of a special travel bubble between the two partners. Accompanying Whipps on his visit was U.S. Ambassador to Palau John Hennessey-Niland, the first American ambassador to visit Taiwan in four decades. The delegation was received at Taoyuan International Airport on March 28 by Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu. Whipps is the first head of state to lead a delegation to Taiwan since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic early last year.
Lithuanian foreign minister, ambassadors discuss ratification of Istanbul Convention

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis met with foreign ambassadors on Thursday to discuss human rights issues, including the ratification of the Istanbul Convention.
According to the Foreign Ministry, during the meeting with the Vilnius-based ambassadors of Estonia, the Netherlands, France, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Spain s acting chargé d affaires, Landsbergis underlined Lithuania’s priority to expand the area of democracy, the rule of law and human rights both within the EU and beyond.
Special attention was paid during the meeting to the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, the so-scalled Istanbul Convention, the statement reads. Participants exchanged views of different countries on the ratification and implementation of this convention.
Language commission rejects proposal to change Belarus name in Lithuanian

A linguistic commission has advised against changing the name of the State of Belarus in Lithuanian.
In Lithuanian, the country is called ‘Baltarusija’, literally ‘White Russia’. Belarusian opposition figure Svetlana Tikhanovkaya, who is currently residing in Vilnius, has asked that it be called ‘Belarusia’ or ‘Baltarusia’, saying this would better reflect her country s national identity and distinctiveness from Russia.
Last week, a temporary sub-commission under the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (VLKK) looked into the proposal, but said it would not agree with the rules of the Lithuanian language.
