Judge denies lowering $1 million bail for 17-year-old charged with killing Malik Sheets last summer

CEDAR RAPIDS A judge Friday denied lowering a $1 million bail for the 17-year-old accused of killing Malik Sheets last summer, noting the seriousness of the crime and that the teen poses a “significant threat” to the community. Marshawn L. Jeffries is charged with first-degree murder and obstruction of prosecution. He and Christian Emedi, 17, both of Cedar Rapids, are accused of fatally shooting Sheets, 20, during a party June 18. Jeffries was 16 at the time but turned 17 in October. Sarah Hradek, the attorney for Jeffries, asked 6th Judicial District Judge Ian Thornhill to lower her client’s $1 million bail because it amounts to holding him in jail since his family can’t post the bond.

CEDAR RAPIDS A Cedar Rapids man charged in a 2011 fatal robbery of a cabdriver is appealing a federal judge’s order he be given involuntary antipsychotic medication to maintain his competency so he can stand trial. Johnathan Dewayne Mitchell, 42, asked U.S. District Chief Judge Leonard Strand to stay temporarily hold the medication order pending an appeal he filed this week with the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. Strand, in his order, said it’s common for courts to delay involuntary medication orders during appeals because any “harm caused by the medication cannot be undone.” Ordering involuntary medication, he stated, can “implicate and entwine defendants’ health and constitutional” rights.

The 12-track, 200-car rail yard will be built on city-owned property south of Stewart Road. Over the two years, plans have shifted back and forth between the Stewart Road property and the “farm property” on Otis Road.
