Credit Courtesy: Chuck Smith / Red River Radio News TRANSGENDER   BILLS -  Legislation in Texas that would’ve prevented  transgender students from competing on school sports teams that align with their gender identity has stalled.  Senate Bill 29 failed to make it out of the Texas House Public Education Committee.   Several Democrats blasted the Republican-backed measure.  75th District State Representative Mary González  described the bill as a solution in search of a problem. ​ We don t need this piece of legislation,” Gonzalez said. “The consequences of this legislation could literally off the rails, and that s not going to be helpful to the House, to the future, and most importantly to kids.

(AP) - Lawmakers on a Louisiana House committee Tuesday narrowly refused to advance a proposal to prohibit transgender athletes from competing on girls’ sports teams in schools. By a one-vote margin, the House Education Committee rejected the bill by Houma Republican Rep. Beryl Amedee. Five lawmakers on the panel voted for the measure, while six voted against it. Two Republicans joined Democrats on the committee in opposing the proposal. That vote isn’t certain to end the debate for the legislative session, however. A similar proposal by Sen. Beth Mizell, the Senate’s second-ranking Republican, awaits debate on the Senate floor after winning the backing of that chamber’s education committee.

LHSAA State Softball Tournament Begins Today in Sulphur The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) State Softball Tournament starts today at the North Frasch Softball Complex in Sulphur. This is a special year for the tournament for a couple of reasons. First, today marks the 20th year the tournament is being held right here in Sulphur. The other reason is this year, the tournament can finally go back to normal as far as attendance. Due to the Governor s announcement on Tuesday, the LHSAA tournament can open at full capacity because it takes place outside. Participating schools, athletes, coaches and fans will all flock to Sulphur starting today for the big three-day tournament.

Cormier has held titles in both the heavyweight and light-heavyweight UFC divisions. A former Olympic wrestler, Cormier joined the Gilroy High School wrestling staff in 2018. This is the highest honor an athlete can obtain in our state. So grateful that my work is appreciated, wrote Cormier on Twitter. I’m just a kid from the Northside of Lafayette and what my life has been is nothing short of the American dream.

NSU president announces retirement effective July 1

NATCHITOCHES—Northwestern State president Chris Maggio announced Friday that he will retire from the university effective July 1.  He has served as president since January 2017 and has been a member of NSU’s faculty, staff and administration for 33 years. “This is a decision that was made during prayerful deliberation with my family and was based entirely on considerations of our family’s future plans and aspirations. There has been no pressure or even the slightest nudge from anyone for me to step down from the presidency,” Maggio stated. He said, “As gratifying as it has been to work over the years in athletics, recruitment and enrollment management, alumni and development, student affairs and as a vice-president and president, those responsibilities have necessitated extensive time away from my family.”
