ArkLaTex seeing increase in COVID-19 vaccinations among minority communities

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - At the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, health experts across the country wanted to pay close attention to minority groups, especially since an overwhelming number of people of color were dying from the virus. Mistrust in past government health experiences and the fear of the unknown made vaccinating minorities difficult.
During the final days of vaccine distribution at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds in Shreveport, many Louisianans lined up for the shot, including Melinda Nash. She was receiving her second dose.

LOUISIANA VACCINE DEMAND? Louisiana officials hailed the opening of a federal mass vaccination site in Baton Rouge fewer than two weeks ago. But Gov. John Bel Edwards said Thursday that the location isn’t seeing enough traffic from people seeking the thousands of coronavirus vaccine doses available. I will be the very first to tell you that the demand at that site is not what we need it to be, not what we hoped it to be, Edwards said. And we re working very hard with the city of Baton Rouge to try to make sure that more Louisianians take advantage of this opportunity.

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The COVID-19 vaccination hub at the Louisiana State Fair Grounds will no longer operate after Saturday, April 24, that’s according to Dr. John Vanchiere.
The LSUHS North Campus location (former Chevyland dealership) at 2627 Linwood Avenue will be the main hub moving forward.
Dr. Vanchiere said only around 200 people are going to the fairgrounds to receive their shot each day, so they have to go where the people are. The closing is also due in part to the State Fair of Louisiana coming to the fairgrounds.
