Paso Robles Joint Unified School District board member Chris Arend who believes systemic racism is a fallacy and yells at Spanish speakers because the district translator doesn t translate very well as well as some of Arend s ideological cronies on the board who are worried that teaching a high school ethnic studies course will unfairly target white students. (Insert eye roll.) These elected officials represent a school district that is majority Latino with a high percentage of families who speak Spanish at home.

Parents frustrated with the Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Education have banded together and are now calling for a recall of three school board members.
These parents say the school board failed its students by not advocating for a return to in-person learning as soon as guidelines allowed. They believe the board s actions are directly responsible for failing grades and now want new representation.
On Tuesday, parents gathered outside the Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Education office to send a message to school board members.

Disgruntled parents have launched an effort to recall three Lucia Mar Unified School District trustees over allegedly taking too long to reopen campuses.
Lucia Mar students returned to campus in a hybrid learning model in late February and early March. Parents seeking a recall of trustees argue the hybrid model should have taken effect much earlier, and the Lucia Mar school board should have sought a return to in-person learning as soon as state guidelines allowed for it. Had the district applied for a waiver like some private schools did, Lucia Mar students may have been able to return to in-person learning sooner.

Under Gov. Gavin Newsom s latest reopening plan, K-12 schools are expected to fully reopen for in-person learning this fall.
San Luis Obispo County Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Brescia says he is in frequent communication with all of the school districts and the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department to discuss what a full reopening might look like.
The return to in-person classes full-time is something Lucia Mar parent Shannon Galvin says she is cautiously optimistic about. They re throwing out the carrot of: Oh, we ll reopen in fall. Okay, well you said that last fall too, so it s hard to get excited about it now when you ve lost so much time and there s still no guarantee you re going to actually open, Galvin explained.
