Food stall operators at the Sawani containment border in Naitasiri claim they have been threatened by Health Ministry officials to cease business or face the consequences.
Makereta Naiteqe, a food seller at the border, said everyone was trying to make a living under very difficult circumstances and the least the ministry could do was assist them.
“On Saturday a health official informed us that by Monday no one would be allowed to operate a food stall,” she claimed.
“She threatened us by saying military personnel will come in if we do not follow instructions.
Jul 06, 2021 04:01:56 PM Opposition Member of Parliament Niko Nawaikula is concerned with the general reluctance of the iTaukei communities to report cases of coronavirus to authorities. Nawaikula in a statement on social media said it is important for members of the public to report early stages of coronavirus cases to avoid hospitalisation. “As expected with the increasing cases numbers we are also seeing increasing numbers of people with severe disease,” he said. “General reluctance by iTaukei communities in the country to report cases of coronavirus is creating problems of its own. “Many indigenous Fijians go to a medical facility only in the late stages of their illness. There is now a trend of people dying at home or on the way to hospital,” he said.
