Frontline meat and poultry workers should be amongst the first to be vaccinated after health care workers and those in long-term care facilities, according to federal guidance approved today by the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Priority (ACIP).
Meat Institute President and CEO Julie Anna Potts applauded ACIP’s guidance and urged state governments to follow CDC’s decision.
“Priority access to vaccines is a critical step for the long-term safety of the selfless frontline meat and poultry workers who have kept America’s refrigerators full and our farm economy working,” Potts said. “Meat Institute members stand ready to support vaccination for our diverse workforce, which will also deliver wide-ranging health benefits in rural and high-risk communities. Meat and poultry leaders may also be able to aid vaccination for all Americans, for example by offering state-of-the-art cold storage for these precious vaccines.”

Amazon closes New Jersey warehouse because of COVID-19 cases
Amazon.com Inc. has temporarily closed a New Jersey warehouse after a spike there in asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, a rare move that comes as the company gears up for a final push in whatâs widely expected to be a record holiday shopping season. The worldâs largest online retailer told employees at the warehouse in Robbinsville Township that the facility will be shuttered until Dec. 26, a spokesperson confirmed. Amazon has generally opted to keep its warehouses and other facilities running amid outbreaks, betting that more frequent cleanings and social distancing limit the risk of the virus spreading within a given building. A rare exception came early in the pandemic in March, when an apparel returns warehouse was idled by order of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear after an outbreak there.

Meat industry groups are urging Gov. J.B. Pritzker to prioritize the COVID-19 vaccination for the men and women who work in the meat and poultry industry.
Nationally, nearly 50,000 meatpacking employees have tested positive for the coronavirus, and at least 253 have died.
The first wave will include health care personnel and residents of long-term care facilities. Essential workers will be considered next, but with limited vaccine doses and a lot of workers considered essential, the jockeying is underway on which ones should go to the front of the line.
Federal guidelines consider almost 70% of Americans to be working in essential industries. So there are now a large group of companies and trade groups making their cases to federal and state authorities.

In a follow-up meeting held on Dec. 20, 2020, AICP confirmed that following Phase 1a of the COVID-19 vaccination program – which gives first priority access of the vaccine to health care personnel and residents of long-term care facilities – frontline essential workers, including those in the food manufacturing industry, would be shortlisted for vaccination as part of Phase 1b.
