Duke Energy is laying out how a settlement with North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein over the coal ash cleanup could lower bills.
Last month, Stein announced his office, along with the state utilities commission and the Sierra Club, reached a settlement with the company.
On Wednesday, Duke Energy told Channel 9 a requested rate increase of 6% across all customer groups to pay for coal ash cleanup would be reduced to 1.3%. The requested rate increase for Duke Energy progress customers would drop from 12.3% to 5.5%.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Duke Energy, North Carolina officials and a conservation group announced Monday an agreement on how the utility pays to get rid of coal ash stored in the state. The proposed settlement would shift an estimated $1.1 billion in expenses away from customers over the next decade to the nation’s largest electric utility and its shareholders.
The agreement was announced a month after the state Supreme Court ruled regulators should revisit an order that would have placed nearly all of the expense upon Duke’s 3.4 million electric customers in the state.

Duke Reaches Agreement With North Carolina For Coal Ash Costs

(Bloomberg) Duke Energy Corp. reached an agreement with North Carolina and the Sierra Club over the costs of cleaning up waste from coal-burning power plants.
The proposed settlement set to be filed Monday with the North Carolina Utilities Commission would slash customers’ costs for closing coal-ash ponds by about $1.1 billion through 2030, Duke said in a statement.
The deal resolves the last remaining major issues in Duke’s long-running fight over cleaning up waste from coal plants, the company said.
Ratings agencies should view the settlement as a positive development as the company will also be allowed to earn a return on its coal-ash expenditures, Guggenheim Securities LLC analyst Shahriar Pourreza wrote in a note Monday. “Focus can now be shifted to working with regulators and legislators on clean energy-legislation” and goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Pourreza said.
