30 Apr 2021, 12:36 PHONE BOXES…Manchester City Council plans to spruce up its four traditional red K6 phone boxes, and convert them from public toilets to landmarks of which Mancs can be proud. The project will see the kiosks, which the council will acquire from BT for £1, cleaned up and restored before being locked up to prevent future damage.  BT has offered the phone boxes to the owners of the land they occupy in a bid to slash its annual repair bill as part of its ‘adopt a kiosk’ initiative. “Most of the boxes have become a burden for BT, which has to repair smashed panes of glass and clean up the mess when members of the public use the payphones as a public convenience,” said a proposal document lodged with the council.

Women in South Cumbria urged not to ignore symptoms of ovarian cancer

PEOPLE in South Cumbria and Lancashire are being urged to be alert to the warning signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Every year in the UK, 7,300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer – that’s 20 per day. A 2020 report from North West Cancer Research found that in Lancashire, ovarian cancer is 10 per cent higher than the national average. Ovarian cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women. It mainly affects women who have been through the menopause, but it can affect women of all ages. Urging people to speak to their GP if they have any of the signs of symptoms of ovarian cancer, Dr Neil Smith, local GP and primary care director for Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance, said: “Your GP can assess you and perhaps run some simple tests to better understand your symptoms.

Charities join together to improve early diagnosis for cancer patients

Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research Tenovus Cancer Care and North West Cancer Research (NWCR) are delighted to announce the joint funding of a new research project that aims to improve early cancer diagnosis, particularly for vulnerable groups. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the widespread use of remote (telephone and video) consulting by GPs and other primary care providers. For some patients, this type of consultation will be acceptable, and they may even prefer this approach. However, for others it may mean that they delay seeking help, which could lead to a less positive outcome. Vulnerable groups such as older people, people living in deprived areas or people from black, Asian and minority groups already face more and different barriers when seeking help, and often only seek help when their cancer is at a more advanced stage.
