Chicago is a violent, dangerous city. Because it’s so violent, police have looked for every edge they can. One system they’ve used over the years is called ShotSpotter. The system basically alerts police when a shot is fired, allowing them to respond, even if no one calls the police.
Yet it seems there are issues with the system.
Mostly, the problem comes after a 13-year-old was shot in what police are calling an “armed confrontation.” Now, ShotSpotter’s role in the shooting has
A good place to begin the reform process Lightfoot has called for would be a critical assessment of ShotSpotter. An ongoing investigation by the MacArthur Justice Center of Northwestern University Law School has yielded evidence that this high-tech tool is wasteful, alienating for community members, and generates intolerable risks of avoidable harms.

I was one of the likely three people who actually watched the show hearings in the Illinois House during lame-duck session regarding eliminating bail and most forms of pretrial detention.
Though the hearings featured witness testimony, remarkably, the super-majority Democrats had a negligible interest in hearing from the criminal defendants in whose name these seismic shifts in criminal justice policy were being sought.
House proponents neglected to call anyone whose life was “destabilized” by pretrial detention after being arrested for dealing methamphetamine or committing arson such that they were deprived gainful employment or the opportunity to care for their families. No one was called who could articulate the exact injustice they suffered after being arrested and released on bail, as opposed to merely ticketed, for committing misdemeanor offenses such as transmitting obscene images, theft, or assault.

CHICAGO (AP) Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Thursday commuted the sentence of a man who claimed he was framed by Chicago police detectives for a 1990 double murder.
Gerald Reed was granted a new trial in 2018 on claims he was tortured into a false murder confession by detectives working for notorious police commander Jon Burge. But last year, Cook County Judge Thomas Hennelly ruled the Reed, 57, should stay in prison because the statement resulting from the alleged abuse was never used against him during trial, so his rights were never violated.
