The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office is warning against a sharp rise in reported calls from scammers identifying themselves as an employee of the Hampshire and Franklin county sheriffs’ offices demanding payment for court charges.
Scammers have been known to identify themselves by name, stating they work in the Civil Division, and then threaten people over the phone by saying they have broken the law by not reporting for a federal grand jury.
“The best thing to do is to hang up, if anyone demands money, payment with gift cards or threatens you,” Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan said in a statement.

Whately resident charged with hunting violations after allegedly shooting deer from his house

WHATELY A Whately resident was charged with several hunting infractions after Massachusetts Environmental Police were notified someone had shot and killed a deer from inside his house.
Environmental Police responded to the violation’s reported location at approximately 8:18 a.m. on Nov. 11 and found a bait site and the location where the animal was killed. The police made contact with the resident at home in his garage, finding an untagged deer hanging from the ceiling in plain sight, according to the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
