The Department of Defense s Commercial Virtual Remote environment, spun up to accommodate telework in the COVID-19 pandemic, quickly became the largest Microsoft Teams deployment in the world and brought department-wide collaboration tools to DOD after years of less-successful attempts.
DOD personnel have embraced the tools and the silo-spanning interactions they enable, but CVR was always intended as a temporary fix. So the Defense Information Systems Agency is working hard to ensure the collaboration doesn t fade when CVR sunsets in July.
Les Benito, the director of operations for DISA s Cloud Computing Program Office, said that Global Directory is the key. Speaking at FCW and Defense Systems March 10 event on Defense Readiness, Benito explained that the initiative will provide a cloud-wide identity as the military services spin up their own Microsoft 365 environments under the Defense Enterprise Office Solutions (DEOS) contract.

In 2020, the Pentagon’s combat IT support agency played a critical role in supporting the department’s rapid transition to telework in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, DISA Director Vice Adm. Nancy Norton, who led the agency through it all, is retiring after three years at the helm of DISA and a 34-year Navy career. In the last year, her agency had to prepare DoD networks for a spike in remote work, helping to roll out the Commercial Virtual Remote environment for videoconferencing, file sharing and other collaboration.

Focus Week is an opportunity for personnel to complete mandatory and discretionary leadership and acquisition training and earn continuous learning points. Dozens of courses will be available, ranging from career and functional area-specific training and coaching to personal development classes.
“We encourage all AFLCMC employees to keep their skills up to date and continue to take advantage of the many self-development opportunities we have available,” said Jason Sibrel, AFLCMC Focus Week program manager. “We are offering a wide range of course topics, from technical acquisition courses to those in soft-skill areas, like leadership and professional growth.”
A few courses on the schedule for acquisition professionals include Business Case Overview for Services Acquisition, Digital Transformation 101, and Cost Estimating for Acquisition Professionals. Platforms include teleconferences, Defense Collaboration Services, and Commercial Virtual Remote using Microsoft Teams.
