Maritime students have a reason to smile after industry regulator, the Kenya Maritime Authority, and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) signed a contract to establish Kenya’s first Maritime Education and Training Financial Support Scheme.
The scheme will support capacity building in the blue economy sector by providing financial assistance in line with the Merchant Shipping Act, 2009.
Principal Secretary, State Department of Shipping and Maritime Affairs Nancy Karigithu, who witnessed the signing of the contract at the KMA headquarters in Mombasa, said the move paved way for KMA to offer financial support to qualifying beneficiaries under the scheme.

TRAVELLERS from three more countries have been placed under enhanced isolation requirement in Wales. The restrictions, already in place for those returning from South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, among others, will now also apply to the Republic of Burundi, Republic of Rwanda and the United Arab Emirates. Health minister Vaughan Gething confirmed the changes in a written statement this evening. The enhanced isolation requirements have been introduced for countries where public health concerns have identified in relation to the transmission of variant strains of coronavirus , he said. Mr Gething said: Today I reviewed the latest JBC assessments and I have decided that the enhanced isolation requirements applying to South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Zambia, Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, Angola, Mauritius, Seychelles, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United Republic of Tanzania should be maintained and reviewed in a further three weeks.
A British treasure hunter who salvaged £32 million of silver bars from a torpedoed WWII wreck could now lose it all in a court battle with the South African government.
Ross Hyett, 67, successfully led a treasure-hunting mission to recover 2,364 South Africa-owned bars of silver from the wreck of the SS Tilawa off the coast of the Maldives.
The ship was a Tyneside-built 10,000-ton steamer that had been taking mostly Indian nationals to South Africa in 1942 with 954 people onboard. Its cargo included 2,391 bars of silver, purchased by the South African government and destined to be turned into coins in their national mint.
Amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 recently came into force after having been adopted in 2018. Malta, as a signatory to the MLC, implemented the changes into domestic law on 18 December 2020, with said changes having effect as of 26 December 2020. As one of the largest ship registries in the world, these changes will have a significant impact on the world s shipping workforce.

The MLC was transposed into Maltese national law and introduced as the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour Convention) Rules, Subsidiary Legislation 234.51.
Under Maltese law, all employment relationships are governed by the Employment and Industrial Relations Act (EIRA), Chapter 452 of the Laws of Malta, and its subsidiary legislation.
