An expert explains. Thinking about who writes history is very important if we want to figure out how it is written. Lots of things influence how we see the world. This includes our education, where we come from, whether we are male or female, rich or poor. All these things affect how historians write the history of people, families, communities and societies in the past.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Bells tolled at the University of Virginia’s chapel on Wednesday afternoon commemorating Liberation and Freedom Day, the start of a long path to freedom for enslaved laborers.
In a virtual panel called “Marching Toward Emancipation: Commemorating the Arrival of Union Troops in Charlottesville,” hosted by the Lifetime Learning program at UVA’s Office of Engagement, historians and researchers reflected on the importance of the historic date.
Polish Court Orders Historians to Apologize Over Holocaust Book
WARSAW A Warsaw court ruled on Tuesday that two historians tarnished the memory of a Polish villager in a book about the Holocaust and must apologize, in a case some academics warn could deter impartial research into Poles’ actions during World War Two.
More than seven decades on, the conflict remains a live political issue in Poland, where the ruling nationalists say studies showing complicity by some Poles in the killing of Jews by Nazi Germany are an attempt to dishonor a country that suffered immensely in the conflict.
