Tomorrow, April 4, kicks off National Library Week, this year’s theme being “Welcome to Your Library.”
“Write dramatic, button-holing leads to your stories,” James Thurber’s editor commanded him during his early days as a newspaper reporter. In response, Thurber turned in a murder story that began, “Dead. That’s what the man was when they found him with a knife in his back at 4 p.m. in front of Riley’s Saloon at the corner of 52nd and 12th Streets.”
Some beginnings are so famously effective that readers can look at them and name the literary works they lead off. Identify the novel or short story started by each passage.
The Jamaica Public Library is hosting an open house during National Library Week.
The open house will take place from 3-5pm on Monday, April 5th. Library Director Alan Robinson says they will have information about the library’s programs, services and activities during the open house. Additionally, there will be door prizes and refreshments available.
National Library Week is April 4th-10th and this year’s theme is “Welcome to Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries serve as an extension beyond the four walls of the building.

Events include a picture book reading and an event highlighting non-fiction books

This year’s theme for the week is ‘Welcome to Your Library.’
Library staff hope the week will remind community members how libraries can be a resource in their daily lives.
“Even during this challenging year, we’ve continued to do what libraries always do; which is look for new and meaningful ways to connect with people,” said La Crosse County Library Dawn Lippman.
Everything starts Monday with a picture book reading event on Facebook.
