Governor Northam signed an emergency legislation, which was supported by the VDH, to allow dentists and other health care professions, to administer the COVID-19 vaccine, effective immediately.
The legislation does not entitle dentists to receive access to supplies of vaccine or guarantee that dentists who sign up will fill roles as vaccinators. The legislation does require VDH to establish a process to allow dentists and other qualified health care professionals to administer the vaccine and to be called on as needed to support the vaccination effort.
VDH is required to establish a process for medical care facilities like dental offices to register as a site that could be approved for COVID-19 vaccine administration.
In addition to her job as primary care physician with Bon Secours, Dr. Sonia Shah-Pandya has been among those dedicating extra hours of her time at testing sites across the region.
Virginia's COVID vaccine coordinator says his department is mapping out spaces across the state for vaccination centers that will operate 6 to 7 days a week.

Gov. Ralph Northam has sent 2,000 National Guard Members to the nation’s capital ahead of next week’s presidential inauguration. Northam expressed remorse over sending members of the guard to Washington, but said the move was necessary following last week’s riot at the Capitol. Measures have also been taken to ensure safety in Richmond ahead of a pro-gun rally planned for Monday. Mayor Levar Stoney said road closures are already in place, and Virginia’s Capitol Square has been closed to the public. Those measures will be in place until at least Jan. 21.
