$110 Million coming to Louisiana for coastal conservation, restoration and hurricane protection programs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Interior today announced nearly $249 million in fiscal year (FY) 2020 energy revenues to the four offshore Gulf oil and gas producing states, including nearly $110 million for Louisiana and its coastal political subdivisions (CPS). These funds, disbursed annually based on oil and gas production revenue, are used to support coastal conservation and restoration projects, hurricane protection programs, and activities to implement marine and coastal resilience management plans. The Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) of 2006 created a revenue-sharing model for oil- and gas-producing Gulf states to receive a portion of the revenue generated from oil and gas production offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. The act also directs a portion of revenue to the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

Bottle up the fees for using spring water

Florida shouldn’t be giving away groundwater to profit water-bottling companies without getting money back to restore the natural springs being affected. Proposals to charge a fee to water bottlers would help keep the cost of spring restoration projects from falling on the backs of other Florida taxpayers. Certainly the best option would be for the state to just reject damaging permits. The excessive pumping and pollution of groundwater harms Florida’s springs as well as the state’s drinking water supply. International companies are making huge profits selling that water to Floridians and other customers in plastic bottles. Nestle announced last month that it was selling its North American water brands to two private equity firms for $4.3 billion.
