Organized labour says recent fuel increments, coupled with the skyrocketing prices of goods and services, are taking a toll on the Ghanaian worker. The call was made in Koforidua on May 1, during the Eastern Regional May Day Celebration under the theme “Economic recovery in an era of COVID-19: The role of social partners.” The Eastern Regional Chairman of TUC, Augustine Micheal Owusu, demanded an increase in the salaries of workers to match the high cost of living.

Workers in the Eastern Region received commendation from the regional minister, Mr Seth Acheampong, who joined the labour day celebration observed on low key due to restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sanwo-Olu approves land for workers housing scheme

4 min read Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos on Saturday approved 10 hectares of land in Idera, Ibeju Lekki, and Badagry for workers housing schemes. Mr Sanwo-Olu handed over the title documents to chairpersons of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) at an elaborate event organised to commemorate Workers’ Day. The event, with the theme: “COVID-19 Pandemic, Social and Economic Crises: Challenges for Jobs, Social Protection and Peoples’ Welfare”, was held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, in the heart of Lagos. The two housing schemes will be built by the labour unions with funds from Federal Mortgage Bank. The Ministry of Housing will supervise the project.
