An asbestos removal firm has been hit with a heavy fine after one of its workers was severely injured when he fell through a roof. Elgin company NJS Scotland admitted failing to provide a safe working environment for the employee who plummeted through a garage roof in Inverurie while carrying out replacement work in 2017. The company, which recently filed for voluntary liquidation, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to ensure proper safety planning and supervision was carried out. It was punished with an £8,000 fine at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.

A north-east man has admitted subjecting his wife to nearly a year of abuse in which he spat at her and shook her “like a rag doll”. Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard how Stuart Wyness, 65, carried out both verbal and physical abuse against his wife – often leaving her “terrified” within their home. Wyness, an electrician, called the woman “ignorant”, “glaikit” and a “useless lump” while also grabbing her by the neck and throwing household items at her between July 2019 and May 2020. The court also heard that during one argument he threw a knife at her feet.

When I drive from Waterbury to Middlesex on Route 2, my eye is often drawn to a log cabin on steroids, the home of the Green Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Then I remember Bill Beard and his passion for scouting.  Bill died in February at the age of 77. His obituary in the Times Argus mentioned his stint as the gas-pumping Santa at the Sunoco station in Montpelier, his commitment to announcing at Mountaineers baseball games, and to church and community organizations. Besides his family, however, Bill’s big passion was scouting.

Valerie Johnston knew she wanted to be a Boy Scout since she was 6. That’s when she started attending meetings with her brother. When she turned 8, she got special permission to get an official uniform, and she joined the co-ed group Venturing at 14. But because she wasn’t a boy, she couldn’t earn badges to achieve the highest rank: Eagle Scout. “I always wanted to be able to earn everything that my brother and all his friends were earning,” Johnston told CNN. “I had my own book, and I would check off the requirements and everything, so I would wonder like, ‘Well why can’t I earn these? ”
