Media release: Enterprising rural women celebrate success of business creation course
A BUSINESS creation project designed to develop enterprise skills and encourage business start-up ideas amongst women based in rural areas of Scotland has just finished its first pilot in three target areas.
The project, which was delivered by Women’s Enterprise Scotland (WES) and Development Trusts Association Scotland (DTAS), ran in the Small Isles, New Cumnock in East Ayrshire and Liddesdale in the Scottish Borders.
It took place over a ten- week period, with weekly sessions held by zoom for 1.5 hours each week, working with a combined cohort of around 30 women.
AMBITIOUS Borders residents are aiming to buy their local village green. The plans have been drawn up by the Newstead Village Community Trust (NVCT), which hopes to revitalise the green space on the corner of Eddy Road and Main Street. The trust’s membership secretary, Isobel King, said: “This has been a challenging year in which to launch the NVCT, but the response from everyone has been tremendous.” The NVCT grew out of social media groups set up to help the community during lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Mark Lovatt, the trust’s chairman, said: “It came about as a result of a need for improved networking to support people in the community through pandemic.

Thurso Community Development Trust members are being invited to have their say.
A proposal to form a community benefit society for Thurso is to be explored at an online meeting this week.
The move comes from Thurso Community Development Trust (TCDT), which has been making steady progress through a five-year strategic plan that was created after community consultation in 2018.
For the past year, the focus has been on delivering community support as part of the Covid-19 response, but members of the team have also been progressing plans that were put in place pre-pandemic.
