COVID Panama City: Bay County residents improve health to fight virus

PANAMA CITY BEACH For Peter Healy, age really is just a number. With a surgical mask secured over his mouth and tennis shoes laced tightly on his feet, the 73-year-old Canadian snowbird was one of four people who completed a high-intensity training circuit on Thursday at Fit Culture in Panama City Beach. Whether he was slamming a medicine ball on the ground, doing step ups or pedaling a fan bike, Healy didn t miss a beat. He even stuck around after the 45-minute workout was over to squeeze in some bicep curls. Despite his motivated and lively personality, Healy is among the millions of seniors across the U.S. living in constant fear of a virus that first made local headlines about a year ago. Although there s a lot he can t control in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Healy said his exercise levels are something he can.

Panama City Florida hospital continues $60 million expansion

PANAMA CITY In a little more than a year, Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center plans to complete a multi-million expansion project. Motorists traveling along West 23rd Street in Panama City might have noticed there s an uptick in activity at the hospital. As of Thursday morning, construction cranes bordered the building, crews roamed the campus and the sound of power tools could be heard from the parking lot. According to Holly Dean, the hospital s chief operating officer, the extra liveliness is thanks to a more than $60 million project to construct three new floors and add almost 60 more hospital beds. The development, which broke ground last October, will also create about 100 new jobs split between positions such as nurses, patient care techs and laboratory workers, she added.
