Share it California regulators are on the lookout for cleaner alternatives to replace the widespread use of back-up diesel generation  particularly among data centers in Silicon Valley and other areas of the state  and some industry players think hydrogen could be the answer.  Hydrogen s ability to provide long periods of storage capability  critical to a state that has experienced reliability problems and an industry that relies on electricity to keep its servers running  could make it an effective option for displacing the current practice of setting up large diesel generators, stakeholders said last week at a workshop hosted by the California Energy Commission.

RICHMOND, Calif. - The Bay Area Air Quality Management District and Chevron USA Inc. have reached a $147,000 settlement for more than two dozen violations at Chevron s Richmond refinery, the air district said Monday. The settlement will cover 29 notices of violation that were issued to Chevron between 2016 and 2018 for multiple issues, including instances of flaring, odor nuisances, an excess of visible emissions and a larger-than-permitted amount of sulfur dioxide at a sulfur recovery operation at the refinery.

Chevron to pay $147,000 for air quality violations The violations, as reported by the air district, occurred from 2016 to 2018. “The air district has the most stringent air quality regulations in the nation to safeguard public health and air quality in the region,” Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the district, said in a statement announcing the settlement. “This settlement is part of an ongoing process to ensure that Chevron is held accountable and follows all state, local and federal permit conditions to protect the health of those in neighboring communities.” The violations addressed in this settlement include: • Several notices of violation for flaring in violation of the federal New Source Performance Standard.
