Petition gets MLA support to review psychiatric emergency services on Vancouver Island

VICTORIA Glen Fawkes, 61, of Campbell River, was an accomplished helicopter pilot, business owner, loving husband and father. Now he is the face of a petition calling for an independent review of psychiatric emergency services on Vancouver Island. “Late winter, early spring of 2020 there were a lot of stressors,” says Lisa Fawkes, Glen’s widow. Lisa got sick, a tree had fallen on the family home and COVID-19 happened. That caused Glen to experience insomnia and anxiety. That turned into paranoia, psychosis and delusions. “Neither he or I had any experience with the mental health-care system and we quickly found that it was very difficult to navigate,” says Lisa.

Lawrie McFarlane: Spending reset would cut deep into services

Per capita, Newfoundland has the highest public debt total in the country, though not by much. The other Atlantic provinces are close behind, as are, to some extent, Ontario, Quebec and the federal government. Here are the recommended spending cuts: A 25 per cent reduction in grants to health authorities; a 30 per cent cut in funding to Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic; unspecified rollbacks in public-service salaries; and overall a cut of five per cent in total government spending. And after that? Far-reaching privatization of non-essential services. This program involves, self-evidently, a complete reconception of the role and scope of government.

Comment: Thank our nurses for all the work they do

I am a public health nurse at the Saanich Health Unit. For 12 years I have been a nurse within the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Before that I had a few employed student nurse years and my Camosun-UVic educational experience. Working as a student nurse is not for the faint of heart, and is a trial in itself so thank you, nursing students. I have never questioned becoming a nurse more than I have in the past year, even though I felt called, since I was a young child, to the work of caring for others, especially newborns. I have worked in fantastic nursing areas that have allowed me to grow, develop and strengthen my knowledge and skills.
