The City of Valdez Municipal Election is May 4th, 2021
KVAK Radio asked the candidate running for the School Board to tell us about themselves and share their thoughts on several questions. Here are their exact responses as provided to KVAK Radio.
There are two vacancies (three year term) available on the Valdez City Council.
Kathleen Todd
Brief Biography: Kathy moved to Valdez in 1980 after upbringing in Oregon, New Jersey, and Washington, Pomona College in California, Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, and family practice residency in Seattle. She and her late husband Dr. Andy Embick raised two daughters here, who went from Valdez City Schools to their current endeavors as a general surgeon at Alaska Native Medical Center and an MSW with a subspecialty in dramatherapy practicing out of Hawaii. The Valdez Board of Education is pleased to announce that a contract for Superintendent of Valdez City Schools has been offered to Mr. Ralph Watkins and has been accepted, pending contract negotiations.
Mr. Watkins is currently Superintendent/Principal at Hoonah City Schools in Hoonah, Alaska. He has worked in the Hoonah school system as Superintendent/Principal since 2016. He moved to Hoonah from Shishmaref, AK, where he served as Principal from 2014 to 2016. Prior to coming to Alaska, he taught in schools in Oregon, Wyoming, and Las Vegas.
The board interviewed three finalists for the position during the week of March 29, 2021-April 3, 2021 Mr. Watkins will assume the duties of superintendent beginning July 1, 2021.

On March 9, Valdez City Schools hosted a public forum with the four finalists for the position of VCS Superintendent.
In the interest of having as much public input as possible, the recording of this forum will remain available for public viewing until Monday, March 15. Along with the recording, a feedback survey is available for members of the public to complete after they have viewed the forum. The survey asks for input on the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate for the Board to consider during their decision-making process.
Both the recording and the survey can be accessed from the VCS website until Monday, March 15.
