13th Annual Demon Dash Four-Mile Run/One-Mile Obstacle Course Tomorrow

Get your orange and black gear on for the 13th annual Demon Dash Fun Run tomorrow. Kids, adults, and even dogs can participate in either the four-mile run that travels around the Washington Community School District buildings or take on the one-mile obstacle course at the high school. The proceeds for the event are split between the district’s physical education program and the YMCA of Washington County’s youth programs. YMCA Washington Branch Director Teri Hartzler says the event receives a lot of support from Washington school staff and youth, “We have a lot of students, we’ve had kids from the track programs or cross country programs, band programs, all different organizations that come out and help us, honor society, whatever kids that want to do any silver cord community service hours. Washington School Board Approves Larger Property Tax for FY22

Property tax rates will be increasing slightly for Washington Community School District residents as they anticipate other projects for the next few years. The board approved the fiscal year 2022 budget at their most recent meeting, which includes a property tax rate of about $16.13 per $1,000 of taxable valuation, compared to $15.98 last year. Superintendent Willie Stone explained they are raising this tax to prepay off one of the district’s loans, and build up their management fund so they can offer a larger early retirement package in 2023 that the board has discussed for a few years, “We’ve got money set aside that we can just pay that off. We don’t have to keep taxing for that, so it’ll allow us the flexibility with our tax rate to be able to maintain our taxes where we need them to be especially as we bond. Depending on what one we pick we will be able to bond without raising our taxes at all which is amazing.”

Washington City Council Approves Wellness Park-YMCA Agreements

The Washington City Council approved wellness park operational agreements with the YMCA of Washington County on a 4-2 vote during Tuesday’s meeting. Steven Gault and Fran Stigers were the two opposing votes on the item which followed a workshop discussion held on March 16th on three agreements for scheduling, recreation services and field management, and shared use. These agreements also include the Washington Community School District, Washington Area Baseball Council, Washington Area Softball Association, and Washington Area Soccer Program. The YMCA will be in charge of concession stand operations, scheduling and general oversight of the sports complex, and the city will be compensating the YMCA $40,000 for these services for this one year agreement. Council Member Fran Stigers remarked that the dollar amount was too high, and that the city’s current recreational services agreement with the organization is $32,000. Five Washington School District Students Part of Iowa Youth Art Month

Five students from the Washington Community School District were chosen by Art Educators of Iowa for their Youth Art Month showcase. AEI members or teachers may enter up to 10 works of art for the showcase, and three second grade students from Stewart Elementary, one fifth grade student from Lincoln Elementary, and one seventh grade student from Washington Middle School were chosen.
