LOCAL ELECTIONS Clockwise from top left: Joseph Polson (Lib Dem), Carl Jones (Conservative), Andrew Osborne (Independent), Ray Ballman (Labour) and Andy Bentley (Green) Housing, crime and anti-social behaviour are all things that matter to the voters of Gorse Hill and Pinehurst.  The ward is one of the smallest in Swindon, but one of the most densely populated. It also suffers among the highest rates of deprivation in Swindon and the south west.  The Pinehurst West area is in the top five of all 132 different areas in Swindon for deprivation in terms of income, employment, education and crime.  The crime rate in the entire ward is twice that of the south west average.

Education bursary helps young graduates become teachers

TWO young graduates have been put on the path to becoming teachers thanks to an education bursary from the Wiltshire Community Foundation. Cassidy Hill saved for two years throughout her sixth form at Matravers School in Westbury, where she grew up, to take up a BEd degree in teaching at Winchester University. But her single mother, who has two other children, couldn’t afford to help with the extra expenses needed on top of what was covered by the student loan. The 21-year-old was awarded £1,500 for each year of the three-year course. Cassidy Hill from Westbury “The grant was an absolutely massive help because my mum just couldn’t afford to give me anything towards university,” she said.

The students have branded the sculpture a “vanity project” but the University of Winchester according to a BBC News report, believes it is the world’s first life-sized sculpture of the “inspirational” Swedish environmental activist. The students’ union opined that the funds used for the production and installation of the statue, could have been better spent, even when the university said “no money was diverted” from student support or staffing for the project.
