State prepares for jury trial next week, first since pandemic began

Like us on Facebook.   BRATTLEBORO — Preparations are underway for a jury trial in Windham County next week, the state’s first since the coronavirus pandemic struck Vermont 14 months ago. The criminal trial, taking place at the state courthouse in Brattleboro, is scheduled to start Wednesday, following a jury draw that begins Monday. The proceedings will involve pandemic-related protocols, such as social distancing and masking, according to court documents. As of Friday, six Windham County defendants were being considered for the lone trial spot. At the top of the list was Anthony Wilson, 44, of Brattleboro, according to the county State’s Attorney’s Office. Wilson is charged with multiple felonies, including heroin trafficking and conspiracy to sell heroin as well as cocaine, court records show.

Suspect in Hartford shooting appears in NH court Modified: 5/3/2021 9:52:01 PM NORTH HAVERHILL A 40-year-old man who pleaded not guilty last week to a charge he broke into a Hartford home and shot a man was back in another court Monday morning on an unrelated drug case out of New Hampshire. Calvin Therrien, who does not have a permanent address, was ordered held without bail on a felony drug possession charge during a virtual hearing in Grafton Superior Court Monday. Therrien, who appeared virtually for the hearing from the Grafton County jail, did not speak throughout his court appearance. The charge stems from an arrest Lebanon Police made in late 2019 when they pulled over a car Therrien was riding in that contained heroin and marijuana, according to an affidavit written by Lebanon Police Officer Ben Bailey. Therrien initially pleaded not guilty to the drug charge and was released on bond in March 2020.

Like us on Facebook.   WEST DOVER — A lawsuit against the North Branch Fire District seeks to undo committee appointments alleged to have been illegal, and allow voters to elect new members. “The Prudential Committee has no authority to appoint a member to its Prudential Committee,” states a complaint filed in Windham Superior Court, Civil Division against the North Branch Fire District and two committee members. “The Prudential Committee cannot appoint interim members, and it cannot appoint members to fill multi-year terms.” Steven Montello of West Dover is being represented by James Valente of Costello, Valente & Gentry of Brattleboro. They are seeking a preliminary injunction against the North Branch Fire District, which runs a wastewater system in West Dover that is governed by the five-member Prudential Committee.
