Editorial: Northern vaccine eligibility expands as pandemic s third wave gains momentum

The last week of April saw good news and bad news for the north and the province as a whole when it comes to the seemingly interminable COVID-19 pandemic, about to stretch into its 15th month in Manitoba. On the bright side, northerners and those who work here no longer have to watch the age of vaccine eligibility creep slowly downward a year or two at a time, as vaccine task force medical lead Dr. Joss Reimer announced April 26 that the Northern Regional Health Authority, as well as Churchill, where health services are administered by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, was one of the latest additions to the province’s priority area list when it comes to vaccinations. As of Monday morning, anyone 18 or over who lives in the north or who lives elsewhere but regularly works here, can book appointments to be vaccinated at super sites and pop-up sites. Hildebrandt says she s hardly seen her father since the COVID-19 pandemic hit because visiting hours have been reduced at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.(Submitted by Lori Hildebrandt) People living in personal care homes have seen a reduction in quality of life since the pandemic hit. Programming has been cancelled and now families say they aren t able to visit loved ones as often as they would like. The vast majority of personal care homes (PCHs) in the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority surveyed by CBC 14 out of 15 have reduced visiting hours since the pandemic hit.

A California city is sharing its unique plan to help those experiencing homelessness in the hopes it catches on elsewhere. The City of Elk Grove s public services manager, Sarah Bontrager, told 680 CJOB the project has been a big success so far and has completely changed the tone of interactions between city workers and Elk Grove s homeless population. We go out and we give out trash bags, and then we go out two weeks later and if folks living in the encampments have bagged their own trash, then they get a $20 gift card that can be used in one of the grocery stores or dollar stores, said Bontrager.
