WINNIPEG Several long term care homes in the city have declared active COVID-19 outbreaks, and recent data from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority shows that many others in the city are turning the corner. The province has started testing asymptomatic people and hopes to bring vaccines into care homes in the new year. Jan Legeros, the executive director of the Long Term and Continuing Care Association of Manitoba, said the pandemic has disproportionately affected people in long term care. “40 per cent of deaths in Manitoba from COVID are in personal care homes, so I would say that we are certainly in a very tragic situation.”

The non-profit announced Wednesday its Just a Warm Sleep shelter would open for the first time in December. The no barrier shelter, which is entering its fifth season of operation, also plans to stay open an extra two hours each night, thanks to donations from End Homelessness Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
Care home says COVID-19 deaths higher than province reported
It was another dark day in Manitoba with 18 lives reported lost to COVID-19.
While the province reported Tuesday that seven of those deaths were connected to an outbreak at Winnipeg s Extendicare Oakview Place, the company that owns the personal care home said the death toll there is much higher. Winnipeg home care services could be cancelled or delayed over the next few days, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority says, as the city braces for a possible winter storm.
Community health services, including home care, may be affected by the storm, the health authority said in a news release Monday.
WINNIPEG A winter storm that is expected to dump up to 25 cm of snow on southern Manitoba by Wednesday could cause delays or cancellations to community health services – specifically home care services. On Monday, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) said the weather-related service delays or cancellations are possible for clients depending on how bad Manitoba is hit by an incoming snowstorm. Every effort will be made to maintain existing schedules. However, some weather-related delays or cancellations may be inevitable, the WRHA said in a new release. It said people who have visits postponed or cancelled will be contacted by phone. It said services will be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled.
