Fall River s Vietnam Wall Almost Completed [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY]

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is an 80 percent replica of the Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C. The Fall River wall is located at Bicentennial Park and a volunteer committee heading the project is hoping for a dedication ceremony this spring. The $1.4 million project began more than two years ago and faced some ups and downs, but Committee President Joe Marshall and others persevered, and it s now on the doorstep of completion. Marshall spoke with Townsquare Sunday this week about the making of the wall, plans for the dedication, and fundraising efforts. The interview can be heard here: Townsquare Sunday is an hour-long public affairs program that airs Sunday morning at 6 on 1420 WBSM. The program highlights individuals and organizations that are working to make Greater New Bedford a better place to live.

Being retired military, I usually visit military museums, war memorials, and monuments to great American leaders. The sheer volume of military attractions and my failure to plan my spur-of-the-moment trip meant I navigated the city like a ricocheting pinball. Some who wander really are lost.

Following American soldiers into the line of fire, hoping to prevent them from becoming yet more casualties, were their medics. Medics trained alongside other troops, but their job in the field was to patch up their comrades when the bullet, grenade, or shell with their name on it found its target. Without body armor or even bulletproof helmets, medics were in as much danger as their comrades and sometimes more. While soldiers could hunker down during bombardments, the medic ran towards the enemy to find the wounded, often with little more than a few bandages, some morphine, and a pair of blunt scissors, and little to no medical training.
