Learner licence applicant fails test, arrested for bribery

CAPE TOWN - NOT only did a 33-year-old learner licence applicant fail his test, he was arrested for bribery on Wednesday.
The City said he offered an examiner at Milnerton Driving License Testing Centre R1 500 to change his results, after he failed the test.
He was arrested and detained at Milnerton SAPS.
âThe City of Cape Town does not tolerate attempts to circumvent the law, as is evident from the examinerâs reaction to the bribe.
âWe appeal to the public to refrain from engaging in this type of behaviour,â said safety and security mayco member JP Smith.

Cape Town - A driving instructor in the Western Cape has been sentenced for fraud in the Vredenburg Regional Court.
In a statement released on Friday, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Zinzi Hani said Augustine Mramba, 36 and Riaan Wild, a traffic officer from Matzikama Municipality, were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team during an intelligence-driven operation on March 9, 2018.
Mramba was an instructor at a driving school.
According to Hani, the pair were arrested after allegations surfaced of corrupt activities at the Vredendal vehicle testing station.
She said the investigation revealed that code 10 driver’s licences were being sold at a minimum of R2 000 each.
Augustine Mramba (36) was sentenced on Wednesday, 07 April 2021 by the Vredenburg Regional Court for corruption.
The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team arrested Riaan Wiid, a traffic officer from Matzikama Municipality, and Mramba who worked as an instructor for Rasta Driving School during an intelligence-driven operation on 09 March 2018.
They were arrested following allegations of corrupt activities at a Vredendal vehicle testing station. The investigations revealed that code 10 driver’s licenses were being sold at a minimum of R2000 each.
Mramba who has been in custody since his arrest was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on the condition that he is not convicted of fraud during the period of suspension. When handing down the sentence the court also took into account that Mramba entered into a plea bargain with the state in exchange for testifying against the traffic official who is due back in court on 14 April 20
For the past 18 months the DNA sample that could probably identify the man who raped a five-year-old, bludgeoned her to death with a stone and left her slumped over a broken toilet, has been left untested in a police laboratory. The suspect, who was out on bail for another rape case, has, in the meanwhile, disappeared.
