WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Plans are moving forward with the idea to revitalize the old railroad corridor in Downtown Wilmington between 3rd Street and McRae Street. The project is dubbed the Wilmington Rail Trail - and it would bring passenger rail service, along with a new multiuse path to Downtown.
It’s an idea that has been in the works for some time now, but started gaining traction early last year.
As the Wilmington area s population grows, so do long commute times and congested roadways.
With this in mind, Wilmington-area officials want to reduce vehicle miles traveled in the region by 10% between 2021 and 2025.
That s why officials from the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, representatives from regional major employers and community stakeholders, who make up the committee Go Coast, have been working on a draft of Cape Fear Change in Motion 2020, a short-range plan outlining how to decrease traffic congestion in the area. This plan is important because it identifies a variety of methods that residents and employers can take to reduce traffic congestion that don’t include expensive roadway projects, said Rebekah Roth, interim planning and land use director for New Hanover County.
