The president of the University of South Carolina has admitted to plagiarizing remarks by retired Adm. William McRaven.
Parts of two of President Bob Caslen s speeches were nearly identical to McRaven s speech to the graduating class of 2014 at the University of Texas at Austin.
University of South Carolina President Bob Caslen, the former superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point, has admitted to plagiarizing remarks by retired Adm. William McRaven during commencement speeches at graduation ceremonies last week.
Caslen offered his resignation to the university s board over the weekend if the board no longer had confidence [in] him serving, as every president serves at the pleasure of the board, university spokesman Jeffrey Stensland said in a statement to Military.com. The offer was not accepted.

In a statement, UofSC President Bob Caslen apologized to Adm. William McRaven, a portion of whose speech he included in his own message to graduates.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC/WIS) - A University of South Carolina spokesman confirmed Tuesday that the schoolâs president offered to resign his post but the schoolâs Board of Trustees rejected the resignation.
In a statement, Caslen acknowledged he used a portion of a speech given in 2014 by Adm. William McRaven in Caslenâs own message to graduates. He issued the following statement to the UofSC community:

Robert Caslen is the president of the University of South Carolina, but during a Friday commencement speech, his mind wandered to the West Coast.
South Carolina hosted its Friday ceremony outside at the football program’s home, Williams-Brice Stadium. The late Will Muschamp years were pretty lean on great moments for the Gamecocks, but Caslen’s blunder probably ranks among the more embarrassing moments in the stadium in recent year.
