A few years ago I had a conversation with a close friend of mine about the experience of watching older films on TV with my parents.
I’d be sitting there, deeply involved with something by John Ford or Sam Peckinpah or King Vidor, and my father would make a comment about the color of the military uniforms being incorrect, or the fact that it looked like it was clearing up outside. These remarks were made in such a way that a response was called for. I would murmur something like “Mmm hmm” or “Uh huh” dutiful, minimal, as noncommittal as possible without being dismissive, and breathless, in order to suggest that believe it or not I was deeply involved with the movie so could you please find it in your heart to save any and all comments or asides or exclamations for the commercial break. This past week we saw the 93rd Academy Awards give the Best Actress Award to Frances McDormand, again, for the 3rd time in her career. This is just one behind the record holder, Katherine Hepburn, who has 4 Oscars. But are these two the greatest of all time?
Well before you read my list below, let me explain how I judged it.
First, it is NOT by how many awards they won. So chill out, Kate Hepburn and Frances McDormand did NOT make my Top 10 but they did make the Top 20. If it was just Oscars, they would be 1 and 2. Instead, I judged these leading ladies by how consistently compelling they are when they appear on the silver screen. It did NOT matter how many movies they did. To me, it’s more of how they grab my attention when they act. In other words, when I see their name on the marquis do I immediately want to watch the movie just because of the top-billed actress.

War is hell. Unless of course itâs Oscar season. Then, war movies like
The Hurt Locker are awesome! In the over 90-year history of the Academy Awards, 16 war movies have won Best Picture at the Oscars. Compare that to Musicals that won Best Picture (10), Comedies (7) Westerns (4) and finally Fantasy (1), and you can clearly see that the Academy shines brightly on people getting gored or blown to smithereens set to dramatic music.
Apocalypse Now. I, like many other people, must seemingly love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells likeâ¦Oscar bait. That said, some war movies are better than others, and I aim to inform you of which of the Best Picture winning war flicks you might want to check out, and which ones you might want to leave in the trenches.
