New lawsuit challenges ballot dropboxes, ballot harvesting in Wisconsin

by Benjamin Yount, The Center Square contributor  | June 29, 2021 06:00 PM Print this article There is a new lawsuit challenging ballot dropboxes and absentee ballot collections in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty filed the suit Monday, just days after the Wisconsin Supreme Court side-stepped a legal challenge on the same questions. “Wisconsin voters deserve certainty that elections are conducted fairly and in accordance with state law. But the Wisconsin Elections Commission is giving advice to clerks that is contrary to the law, putting the ballots of countless voters at risk,” WILL’s Rick Essenberg said. The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled 4-3 on Friday to dismiss a legal challenge to dropboxes and ballot harvesting. Swing justice Brian Hagedorn joined the court’s liberal justices in dismissing the claim for technical reasons.

Conservative group challenges Wisconsin ballot drop boxes

Conservative group challenges Wisconsin ballot drop boxes MADISON, Wis. (AP) A nonprofit conservative law firm filed a lawsuit in Wisconsin that challenges the state s use of absentee ballot drop boxes. The suit filed Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court by Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty argues against the state Elections Commission s interpretation that ballot drop boxes can be unstaffed, temporary or permanent. The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the institute is asking the court to allow absentee ballots to be cast only by mail or in-person delivery to a municipal clerk.   Absentee ballot boxes and community ballot collecting initiatives were widely used during the November election and clerks made use of drop boxes during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide more return options for the high number of absentee voters.
